Come,follow the Lord

4:19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,[a] the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

1. Jesus took the initiative to call Peter

This is a scripture paragraph in which Simon Peter was called. Peter was a fisherman. One day Jesus took the initiative to come to his boat and actively called Peter, asking him to put out the boat, leave the people on the shore a little bit, and sit down. Today, maybe you don’t know why we spend so much energy on managing the church and post money, things, and time ourselves? This is because Jesus actively called. The leadership position of the church is not equal to the social style. The church is a servant-like leadership. We need to be an example. We are blessed to be elected, because this is God's active election. , This is the call of God himself. You must know that many people crowded around Jesus, wanting to get visible benefits from Jesus. Jesus only got on Peter's boat. Today we become the leader of the church because Jesus chose us from thousands of people. This is the initiative of God's love.

In the second sense, Peter did not sell, because Peter obeyed Jesus' instructions and drove the boat to the depths of the water and lowered the net to catch fish. The result was that the two boats were filled with fish, and the boat even sank. The harvest this time was something Peter had never experienced in his life. Serving God is the same. Usually we spend money and time and energy. God rewards us not only on the spiritual level, but also on the material level. We use it in God’s ministry. The money you donate in the church, God does Know that he is our heavenly Father, and he will supply us. I gave some money to a friend who manages money in January. His job is to do wealth management. It’s amazing. He told me a few days ago that because the money was invested in real estate, the price of land soared during this time. Our income is likely to reach 50%. I can't believe my ears. What we give to God and what God gives us far exceeds our imagination.

2. Strive to enter the narrow gate of heaven

Peter experienced such a miracle, he said from the bottom of his heart: Lord, leave me, I am a sinner! If we were Peter, perhaps we would be happy and would say, Jesus, your vision is very accurate. I will pay for a few more fishing boats. Then, all you have to do is sit on the boat and give orders. We can make a lot of money by working together. full. In fact, when we really meet the Lord, the world will be far away from us. Spiritual things are far more attractive than income from materials, because God's things are about eternity. We need to work hard to enter the narrow gate to enter the kingdom of God! “ From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[d] and violent people have been raiding it.” (Mat. 11:12)

Many people think that they have been serving God all their lives, and they claim that Jesus is Lord, but at the end of the day they suddenly find that they are not recognized by Jesus. We need such vigilance and reminder!

Luke 13 and Matthew 7 both recorded such a thing. The Lord Jesus said: “On that day (the day the Lord returns) will many people say to me: 'Lord, Lord, we are not serving Preach in your name, cast out demons in your name, and perform many supernatural powers in your name?' I told them plainly:'I never knew you, you evildoers, leave me! '" The people described by the Lord Jesus not only preached that Jesus is Lord, they are also diligent in preaching the Lord's gospel, and they even have the ability to cast out demons and perform miracles. Judging from these external behaviors, we all feel that such people must be in the kingdom of God. Even this type of person himself feels foolproof. But the Lord Jesus said that when he came again, he didn't even know them. The Lord Jesus' evaluation of them was "you evildoers! Leave me!"

Why is this so? Because they did not enter the narrow gate. These people naturally feel that they should enter the door, but the truth is that the Patriarch said, "I don't know where you are from? (In other words: I don't know you) All you evildoers, leave me! " how so? Because the gospel requires us to have true repentance!

Many Christians are very stable to attend church worship every week. They even spend more time listening to more of God’s word every week. He also obeys the Lord Jesus’ command to preach the gospel diligently and attend the church diligently. They are also willing to use their money to support the ministry of the church. Some of them even have special gifts to heal the sick and cast out ghosts. But in the end they discovered that they could not enter the kingdom of God at all. what is the reason? We can see the deep reasons for this from the final conclusion of the Lord Jesus: these are evil people! These people have not left their evil deeds in essence. On the one hand, these people are serving God, but on the other hand they are still living in sin. That is to say, although these people have followed Jesus on the surface, they have not really repented, and they have not left them. Evil deeds.

Repentance is very important! True repentance is "bearing fruit commensurate with the heart of repentance." The good tree is good because it has good fruit. Only true repentance can enable sinners to escape future judgment, and only true repentance can enable sinners to enter God. Country. He further tells us that true repentance is the fruit of that visible behavior! The repentance of Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector in Jericho, who climbed up the tree to observe Jesus, also tells us this principle. Zacchaeus said: "Lord, I give half of everything to the poor; if I blackmail someone, I will pay it back. He is four times", Zacchaeus has actual actions, he uses four times the price to return to those who he had blackmailed.

3. Leave everything behind and follow Jesus

Under the call of the Lord Jesus, "Don't be afraid, from now on, you are going to win people!" Peter put the boat on the shore, and immediately left everything and followed Jesus. The same chapter of Luke’s Gospel also recorded later that the Lord Jesus called to Matthew at the tax booth, and Matthew immediately left everything at the tax booth and followed the Lord. And when the two sons of Zebedee, James and John, heard Jesus' call, they immediately left the workers on the boat and followed Jesus.

The call to "follow me" is a universal call from the Lord Jesus to his followers. Jesus not only calls us to repent, he also challenges us to leave everything behind and follow him. That is to say, true repentance will inevitably lead to abandoning everything to follow, and leaving everything to follow will inevitably accompany true repentance. Repentance and following the Lord are two aspects of the same thing, each of which is essential.

Our Lord often reminds those who follow him to first understand the cost of following him! The Lord Jesus said, Do you want to follow me? You better know the price of following me! Chapter 8 of Matthew's Gospel records that a scribe said to Jesus: "Teacher, wherever you go, I will follow you." Jesus said: "Foxes have holes, birds in the sky have dens, but the Son of Man has no place for pillows. "Our Lord is reminding this pampered scribe, are you really willing to go everywhere with me?" Do you know what this means? Do you know the cost of this? Following me means that where I am, you also need to follow me there. In order to preach the way of the kingdom of God, I need to travel to cities and towns. I don't have a fixed residence. Would you like to live a life like this with me?

25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. 28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’ 31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.

There are a lot of people here following Jesus, but the Lord Jesus turned to challenge those who followed him. Are you really willing to follow me? Are you really willing to be my disciple? Then you'd better calculate the cost of following! Otherwise you are likely to give up halfway. To be my disciple and to follow me means that from today on, the most loved object in your life needs to be replaced by me, and I become the highest priority of all you love; to be my disciple, to follow me means You must always carry your cross and be ready to deny yourself at any time. To be my disciple, to follow me means that you need to leave everything that you value to come and follow me! Do you remember the young official who was unwilling to sell everything to the poor and then follow the Lord? He really knew that he could not pay such a price, so he left his master sadly! Therefore, brothers and sisters, before you and I decide to follow the Lord, we need to clear and understand the calculation of the cost. This is our Lord repeatedly reminded us. Our Lord does not want us to follow Him in a daze. He wants us to understand clearly. The price to pay for following him.

The Lord said to Peter, "From today, you are going to win people!" When Peter preached in Acts, 3,000 people and 5,000 people were saved and returned to the kingdom of God. The Lord’s promise was indeed fulfilled. Peter is indeed a fish. But between the promise and fulfillment of the Lord Jesus, it is indispensable to go through the test of faith. Since that day, Peter has experienced many trials of faith, and the Bible records many times in these trials of faith. Peter fell and Peter failed. Peter experienced the wind and waves filling the boat and fell into a panic of life and death, even if his lord was in the same boat with him. Peter also experienced walking confidently on the water at the beginning, but then immediately sank due to the shift of focus. Peter also experienced the embarrassing experience of being rebuked by the Lord to say, "Satan, leave me behind." In the Garden of Gethsemane, Peter had three experiences of not being able to watch and pray with his Lord; what’s more, on the same night, Peter experienced three times denying the Lord, even swearing a curse and swearing. The Gospels have recorded this matter). After the Lord Jesus was resurrected, even though the Lord had appeared to them, Peter still took the lead to go back to his old profession with the 6 disciples of Jesus, and he went back to fishing. These experiences of Peter are actually disgraceful experiences. Isn’t this a fact that we have also experienced following the Lord? We have all experienced little letters, we have all experienced the panic of forgetting the Lord’s presence at a critical moment, we have also experienced carnal choices, we have also experienced a life of insufficient vigilance and lack of prayer, we are even following the Lord We also had a retreat on the road. Therefore, brothers and sisters, the price that needs to be paid to follow the Lord is also real, and the process is accompanied by moments of weak faith and failure. Are you willing to accept such a challenge? Do you want to? Are you willing to follow Jesus?
